American Apparel
I have spent quite a lot of time looking for decent T-shirts in the past few weeks – and I can assure you it's no easy task. They're either ridiculously expensive, plain white or terrible quality.
Or they're ridiculously expensive, plain white and terrible quality.
But I have stumbled across a couple of quite good companies in the course of my travels, both coincidentally American.
One (at the more expensive end of the scale) is C&C California, but they only sell through a few London-based stores like Harvey Nichols and Selfridges.
(You can order direct from their website. However, not only do they charge $50 for shipping but you'll have to pay import duties as well – which even with the US dollar in the doldrums makes for a very expensive T-shirt.)
The other option is cheaper and a whole lot more convenient - American Apparel. They have three of their own stores in this country (all in London), but also a UK-based online business.
There's nothing particularly wonderful about the T-shirts, but they're well-made, they have a large selection of colours and you won't need a small mortgage to buy them.
And that's quite something.
